New York Offer Ze Roberto Deal

Hamburg winger Ze Roberto has received a lucrative offer to end his career with the New York Red Bulls.

The 35-year-old is halfway through a two-year contract with the northern Germany side and was in blistering form before picking up an ankle injury late last year.

That ruled him out for the past three months, but he made a goalscoring return to the starting XI against Bayer Leverkusen last Sunday and is still regarded as one of Hamburg's most influential players.

Former Hamburg director of sport Dietmar Beiersdorfer, who was instrumental in taking Ze Roberto to the northern Germany club last summer, is now the general manager at the Red Bulls and he is believed
to have instigated the move.

According to the Bild, Ze Roberto has been offered a three-year contract with the promise of a coaching or ambassador role with the Major League Soccer club.

The Brazilian has scored six times this season and turned his back on Bayern Munich last summer after they refused to offer him more than a 12-month contract.

Therefore, the security of a three-year deal in the United States, which Hamburg are unlikely to match, may well convince the winger to pack his bags at the end of the season, particularly since Hamburg appear unlikely to qualify for the Champions League this term.

They are currently 10 points behind the top three in fifth position, just one point ahead of Werder Bremen in the race for a place in the Europa League.
