Referee Nicola Rizzoli’s decision to award Napoli a penalty against Roma has earned him the wrath of Philippe Mexes.
The referee had given the penalty to Napoli after having adjudged Mexes to have handled the ball inside the area.
Roma was leading 2-1 in stoppage time when Napoli striker German Denis' attempted ‘sombrero' flick bounced off Mexes' chest and onto his arm.
The referee wasted no time in pointing to the spot, from which Marek Hamsik converted to earn the home side a point from the draw.
Mexes revealed his side to Sky Sport Italia after the match and protested his innocence.
"That was absolutely not a penalty. The ball hit my chest and then ended up on my arm. You tell me if that was a penalty. And it's really a shame that the game finished like that, because we left two crucial points here and, most of all, a victory I thought we would have deserved."
With regards to Ranieri's decision to field a three man defence with him beside Nicolas Burdisso and Juan, Mexes claimed: "I liked it. It was not the first time for me though as I had played in that role several times during my spell at Auxerre."
