Iraq’s Ali Abbas Set To Leave Newcastle Jets If Not Offered Contract

Newcastle Jets winger Ali Abbas says he will return home to Iraq if he does not get a contract with the A-League club.

The 23-year old has been very impressive for the Jets this season but admits that if nothing is sorted out in the next few weeks, he will be forced to go back to Baghdad.

"I have a couple of options but nothing firm," Abbas, who has attracted interest from Gold Coast United, told the Newcastle Herald.

"If I don't get a contract in the next 15 days I will have to go back to Iraq. I can't afford to stay. Hopefully we can sort something out with the Jets. I like the club and want to stay."

And Abbas revealed that the Iraq national team were keen to have him back in their set up after his positive showings for Newcastle.

"They have contacted me and told me I'm in their plans for the Asian Cup in January,” he added.
